Workbench Design – How it Works and Why I Love It!
There are lots of workbench designs out there, but I had some very specific ideas when I designed the Jack Bench Adjustable Height Workbench in 2007. I discuss why I wanted an adjustable height workbench and why I love using it later in this article.
In about 2010 I uploaded a short and simple YouTube video showing how it operates. That first video is incredibly out of date, and by today’s standards it is almost unwatchable. In 2018, I posted this updated video explaining the bench design. I am very interested to know what you think of the updated video. Of course I am always interested to know your thoughts on the bench itself, so please leave a comment or send me an email!
Workbench Design: How it works is really pretty simple
There are two scissors jacks. The first one is used to raise and lower the bench height. The second one is used to pick the bench up off the floor and on to the mobile base.
I originally used regular automotive jacks, but then I discovered motorcycle jacks! After extensive testing I now use and recommend motorcycle jacks.
Please note: I switched over to motorcycle jacks after I posted the (above) photo/video, and that’s why there is a regular scissors jack in that photo. If you build your own Jack Bench, then please use the motorcycle jacks as recommended in the plans.
Why I Designed the Jack Bench
I was doing a lot of carving around the time when I designed the Jack Bench. The bench that I had back then was so low that I frequently got a backache when I used it. Also, the bench sat behind my table saw and the bench got in the way whenever I ran a long board through it. In that case my bench was too high. That bench was also very difficult to move. So, that first workbench was too low, and too high, and too heavy to easily move around. That’s why I designed the Jack Bench!
Why I Love this Adjustable Height Workbench Design!
I adjust the height of my bench at least 3-4 times during construction of each and every project that I make.
I adjust it high for most work, especially machine work, like when I am routing the edge of a board.
I adjust is even higher for detail work, like when I am doing marquetry or veneer work.
But, I like it low when working with hand tools, especially when I am planing a board.
And, I like it even lower when I am doing assembly work; during glue ups, when assembling pieces, for finishing, and anytime I am working with something large and bulky.
Being able to adjust the bench height is simply more ergonomic, and easier on my back!
An adjustable height bench is always at the perfect height, for EVERY member of your family.
I really love how easy it is to adjust the height of my bench, too.
The Mobile Base is the Icing on the Cake
Being able to EASILY move my bench around is truly a luxury and I am so glad that I included that in my bench design!
A Winning Design
With it’s unique design, the Jack Bench has been featured by Fine Woodworking Magazine, it’s been featured on Scott Phillips’ American Woodshop, and dozens of various different websites.
Many of the people who have purchased plans for the Jack Bench have told me how much they love their Jack Benches. Some of them have also sent pictures of their completed benches. Enjoy!
